On April 14th all Sri Lankan's celebrate the New Year. As per the astrological calendar this mark the Sun moving from Meena rashi (Pisces) to Mesha rashi (Aries). This marks the beginning of a new year. Many different sweets and savory items are made to celebrate this occasion. Kavum, Kokis, Dodol, Kiribath and Pani Walalu are some of my favorites.
